Confidently Plug in to the Language and Culture of the Spanish-Speaking
World
Streetwise Spanish is an informative guide to Spanish culture and
language. Though there is an emphasis on Barcelona, each of the ten chapters
deals with practical topics that an engaged visitor to any Spanish-speaking
culture will find useful, including Finding Your Way, Staying Safe and
Sound, and Quenching your Thirst.
The writing is a blend of Spanish and English and, while there are lists of
vocabulary and phrases accompanied with translations throughout each chapter,
much of the text assumes that you have some familiarity with Spanish as there
are no translations in the margins.
The layout of Streetwise Spanish makes it easy to read and a useful
companion on a your next trip to a Spanish-speaking region. However, at 8½ by
11½ inches, this might not be the phrase book that you're going to carry around
town.
I enjoyed reading the humorous anecdotes and appreciated the cautionary tales
and advice. I wish I had read this book before going to Barcelona and being
pick-pocketed.
