Spanish language FAQ: I'm going to a Spanish-speaking country for only a few days. Should I bother trying to learn any Spanish?

English is often considered to be the "global" language - the odds are that someone will speak it pretty much wherever you go. However, I still think it is a good idea to learn some Spanish, as much as possible, even though you will only be there for a short time. Imagine how you would feel if a person came to your country and spoke no English but expected you to speak their language.

Learning some Spanish before you go will demonstrate that you respect that country's people and their culture. In my experience, people are much more welcoming if you make an effort to speak to them in their language, even if it's only a few words.

Start with my Spanish for Beginners section - you'll find practical vocabulary and pronunciation to help you get by in Spain, Mexico, or another Spanish-speaking country.

You might also consider purchasing a travel guide - search for "travel in (country you will be visiting)" at Amazon.com - good travel books usually include a section on important vocabulary.
